Had a failure lately? Don't get angry, humiliated
or depressed... just use your Mulligan!
Have you ever messed up, blown it, choked or just missed an opportunity? Maybe it was a presentation, a big game or a romantic interlude. Were you prepared or ready to go but for whatever reason it just didn’t work out?
There is a solution...use your Mulligan!
What is a Mulligan you ask? In the game of golf it’s done all the time, it works for them, you mess up, you do it over, no big deal. the whole group on the round understands
I was on a huge golf outing a few years ago at a classy golf course in northern Wisconsin. There was about
twenty-five guys, all good golfers and ready for a good time and a great round. All of the guys, I mean everyone, names like Coon-dog, Pallbearer, Mad dog and Hillbilly. All great guys and serious about the game.
I had known about the golf outing for several months and practiced on the driving range on a few times, purchased a new pair of golf shoes, balls, tees and was trying out an extra large driver for the first time. The groups were split into six foursomes (or groups of four). I was put into the first group to tee off with all the guys all standing around. I was up to right after a guy named the Preacher, (not sure why). He hit a pretty
good shot right down the middle, my turn was next.
It was mid April and the greens keeper was hanging out chatting with players. He told the guy next to me while I was getting ready to hit that he had just gotten this tee box turf perfect and to treat it right .I tee my ball, pull out my Big Super Bertha driver, line up my shot for a straight three hundreds yard power hit and proceed to take a huge chunk out of the turf so big you could park the golf cart on it.
Needless to say, the greens keeper wasn’t impressed. I took a Mulligan and teed up again and had a pretty decent hundred and seventy five yard hit right down the middle. I went on to play out the hole and then another thirty five more that weekend. I should confess that I have used it many other times since then.
The question remains....What is a Mulligan
and why can’t we use it for everything,
besides just golf?
Wikipedia has a few origin stories of the Mulligan.
A mulligan is a second chance to perform an action, usually after the first chance went wrong through bad luck or a blunder. Its best-known meaning is in golf whereby a player is informally allowed to replay a stroke, even though this is against the formal rules of golf. The term has also been applied to other sports and games, and to other fields generally. The origin of the term is unclear. Traditionally, mulligans can only be played on tee shots (which are notoriously difficult to make accurately), and sometimes they may only be played on the first tee shot of the round. In the case of a mulligan used to replay the first tee shot, multiple "mulligans" may be allowed under different names (Finnegan, Branagan, Flanagan or a Craig) until the player has hit a playable tee shot. Wikipedia covers those potential origin stories too. Here
So I am proposing that we all allow a Mulligan for other misteps, faux pauxs, errors, false starts and just plain mistakes. Give yourself a break and use it.
